Snoring
Snoring is an affliction that affects up to half of the adult population with males being affected twice as much as females. In reality of course, where bed partners are concerned, it is a condition that often affects at least two people and the effects can place a lot of strain on the best of relationships.
A mandibular advancement splint may be the answer to restore harmony to the relationship. It is a simple custom made dental device that positions the lower jaw (mandible) forward and thus keeps the airway open during sleep to eliminate snoring.
A mandibular advancement splint is an effective, non-invasive approach to snoring elimination. For patients with very few or no teeth at all a tongue stabilizing device can be very effective.
Appliances:
Snoring appliances are devices designed to hold the lower jaw in a forward position while sleeping. This has the effect of maintaining an open airway during sleep which in turn eliminates the ability to cause vibrations of the soft palate (snoring) while breathing.

Cost:
The most basic package for a comprehensive oral and dental examination, snoring assessment and provision of a snoring appliance is €250 with the most sophisticated appliance costing €1,800.
Patients suitable:
for a snoring treatment appliance need to have good oral health and dental function. This is assessed as part of the initial examination. Sometimes remedial dental treatment is necessary to bring a patient to appropriate dental health and function. Patients with few or no teeth are unsuitable for mandibular advancement splints but suitable for tongue stabilizing devices
Sleep Apnoea:
Approximately 50% of snorers suffer from the more concerning condition known as “Sleep Apnoea”. Patients will be screened for this at the initial appointment and an appropriate referral made to a suitably qualified medical doctor for assessment. If a dental device is advised by the medical doctor this can then be provided.
